This study aims to contrast the Korean adverbial particles with Vietnamese counterparts to find similarities and differences between the two languages to help Korean Vietnamese learners to overcome the difficulties relating to the Korean adverbial particles they are experiencing due to the interference of their mother tongue. To achieve this, in Chapter 1, previous studies about the Korean adverbial particles were reviewed, and in Chapter 2, the literature review was presented.
Through parallel corpus data, Chapter 3 contrasted forms of the Korean adverbial particles and their Vietnamese counterparts. Looking at the forms, Vietnamese equivalents can be classified into two types: a single morpheme, which is a preposition, and a complex form composed of multiple morphemes combined. In addition, the Korean adverbial particles are not presented in the translated Vietnamese sentences due to the presence of direction/position words such as ‘ap, gyeot, mit, sok‘. It can also be because some nouns, verbs or adjectives in Vietnamese are not combined with a relative pronoun like preposition or conjunction.
In Chapter 4, with an analysis of parallel corpus data, the meanings of Korean adverbial particles and Vietnamese counterparts were contrasted. In terms of meaning, the Vietnamese markers corresponding to each Korean adverbial particle and the ways in which it could cause errors due to interference from the mother tongue were identified. The analysis results are summarized as follows.
Firstly, while in Korean, the proposition ‘e’ and ‘eseo’ are used differently depending on the types of the companying verb, the Vietnamese equivalents are used without distinction. Due to this difference, Korean Vietnamese learners may confuse ‘e’ and ‘eseo’ when indicating place.
Secondly, in Korean, ‘e’ and ‘(eu)ro’ are used differently to indicate time, but in Vietnamese, such a difference in meaning is often not specified. Therefore Korean Vietnamese learners may confuse or omit when using ‘e’ and ‘(eu)ro’ to indicate time.
Thirdly, when a cause is expressed, in Korean, the propositions ‘e’ and ‘(eu)ro’ are used separately in consideration of whether it is the cause of the active action of the subject. Unlike Korean, Vietnamese expresses cause-effect based on positive, neutral, and negative meanings.
Fourthly, in Vietnamese, it is common to use the marker ‘về phía’ (toward) to indicate the direction, but unless it is absolutely necessary, the expression indicating the destination tends to be preferred. Conversely, except in special cases, in Korean, ‘e’, which indicates a destination, and ‘(eu)ro’, which indicates ‘direction’ are distinguished.
Fifthly, when an object is expressed, in Vietnamese, the same marker (với) can be used without distinguishing whether the object is an object or a person, whereas in Korean, the propositions ‘e’ and ‘ege’ are used to indicate this difference. As a result, Vietnamese learners are unaware of the distinction between objects and people due to the influence of their mother tongue, so they have no choice but to confuse the two adverbial particles.
Due to this difference between the two languages, Vietnamese learners may experience a lot of confusion and make errors when learning Korean adverbial particles. In this way, if they pay attention to the parts that can cause errors due to interference from their mother tongue, and teach/learn what is easy to confuse through distinguishing meanings activities and repeating practices, they will ultimately be able to reduce these common errors.
