이태준 소설의 노인 형상과 동정적 청년 세대의 시선 = The Figure of Older People in Lee Taejun's Novels and the Perspective of the Sympathetic Young Generation

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 이태준의 소설에 나타난 노인 형상과 노년의 인물에 대해 동정적인 청년 인물의 시선을 세대론의 관점에서 고찰하고자 한 것이다. 이를 통해 우리 시대 노인을 바라보는 불편한 시선이 무엇에서 기인하는지 추론하고, 구세대에 대한 적절한 예우와 신세대에 대한 배려의 형식을 함께 생각해 보려 했다. ｢불우노인｣과 ｢영월영감｣에 묘사된 노인들은 변한 시대에 대처하고, 사회를 위해 의미 있는 일을 도모해 보려는 적극적 인물형이다. 그러나 그들의 의지를 세상 사람들이 알아주지는 않는다. 흥미로운 것은 이들 작품이청년 인물을 등장시켜 초라한 행색의 노인을 동정적 시선으로 관찰하고 있다는 점이다. ｢불우노인｣과 ｢영월영감｣의 청년 인물들은 노인들의 일에 참여하거나 그 뜻에 동의하지않지만, 그들의 이야기를 경청하고 아무런 편견 없이 대응한다. 그들의 노력이 변한 세상에서 유효한 것이 될 수 없음을 알지만, 그렇다고 결코 틀린 것은 아님을 인정하는 태도이다. 노인들의 생애를 그들의 시대와 더불어 애도하는 최선의 형식을 집약적으로 보여주는 작품은 ｢돌다리｣이다. 작중의 아들과 아버지는 서로의 삶의 방식에 대해 존중하는 태도를 드러내는데, 구시대와는 절연할 수밖에 없으나 구세대와는 연대할 수 있는 최선의방법이라고 생각했기 때문이다. 이태준의 ｢돌다리｣ 등 노년 서사는 물러나는 자에 대한예우가 사라지고, 밀려나는 자에 대한 애잔한 동정만이 남은 근대사회의 단면을 여실히드러낸다.

This paper is intended to examine the image of an older adult and the sympathetic perspectives of young characters in Lee Taejun’s novels regarding generational theory. Through this, I tried to infer what causes the uncomfortable view toward older people these days and to think about appropriate forms of respect for the older generation and consideration for the new generation.
The older adults depicted in Mr. Disadvantaged and Yeongwol Yeonggam are active characters who cope with a changing era and try to do meaningful work for society. But the world does not believe in their will. Interestingly, these works feature young characters and observe the shabby older man with a sympathetic gaze. The young characters in these works do not participate in older people’s work or agree with their intentions, but listen to their stories and respond without prejudice. The young characters know that the efforts of older people cannot be practical in a changed world, but they also acknowledge that it is not wrong. Stone Bridge is a work that intensively shows the best form of mourning the lives of older people, along with their times. Novels such as Lee Taejun’s Stone Bridge reveal a side of modern society where respect for those who step down has disappeared, and only sad sympathy for those pushed out remains.
