｢소설가 구보씨의 일일(小說家仇甫氏의一日)｣ 삽화에 담긴 의미 : 구보씨와 이상씨의 문학적 교유를 배경으로 = The Meaning Embedded in the Illustrations of A Day in the Life of Novelist Gu-bo- The Literary Relationship Between Mr. Gu-bo and Mr. Yi Sang

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이상(李箱)이 박태원(朴泰遠)의 소설 ｢소설가 구보씨의 일일(小說家仇甫氏의一日)｣(조선중앙일보, 1934.8.1.-9.19)에 그렸던 삽화는 구보씨가 하루 동안 돌아다닌 소설 속 경성이라는 도시 풍경에 대한 묘사이자, 두 예술가가 나눴던 예술적 우정에 대한 관계의 지도다. 이 삽화는, 당시 이상이 경영하고 있던 제비 다방에서 두 사람이 나눴던 예술적 이상을바탕으로 한 오랜 대화와 협업을 통해 완성된 산물이었다. 이상은 ｢소설가 구보씨의 일일｣ 의 삽화의 표제에서부터 이 소설이 구보씨가 삶 속에서 마주한 모순을 형상화하고 있다는사실을 드러낸다. 어머니의 욕망과 소설가의 욕망 사이에서 부지런히 원고지를 오가는 펜이야말로 구보씨가 처한 생의 모순을 폭로한다. 끝없이 행복을 좇으면서도 정작 눈 앞의행복에는 눈멀어 있는 구보씨는, 여기에 존재하고 있으면서 과거의 기억에 매어 있는 어쩔 수 없는 모순적 인간의 평범한 영도다. 소설의 문면과 행간, 그리고 여백을 오가며 이상은 구보씨와의 우정을 개입시켜, 이를 더 풍부한 의미로 읽어낸다. 한국 근대의 신문연재소설사상 비슷한 예를 찾기 어려운 이 독특한 삽화적 실천은 바로 소설가 구보씨와 삽화가 이상씨 사이의 친밀한 교유를 바탕으로 한 내밀한 소통이었던 셈이다.

The illustrations that Yi Sang drew for Park Taewon's novel A Day in the Life of Novelist Gu-bo (JoseonJoongangIlbo(朝鮮中央日報), 1934.8.1-9.19) depict not only the urban landscape of Gyeongseong (京城) within which Gu-bo wanders throughout his day, but also a map of the artistic friendship shared between these two artists during the colonial period. From the title of his illustrations for A Day in the Life of Novelist Gu-bo, Yi Sang reveals that the novel embodies the contradictions Gu-bo faces in his life. The pen diligently moves across the manuscript paper, caught between his mother's desires and his own as a novelist, and exposes the fundamental contradictions of Gu-bo's existence. Gu-bo, endlessly pursuing happiness yet blind to the happiness before his eyes, is an ordinary portrayal of the inevitable contradictions of a human being who exists in the present while being tethered to memories. Moving around the page, between lines, and in the novel's margins, Yi Sang interjects his friendship with Gu-bo, enriching its meaning. This unique illustrative practice, rarely found in the history of serialized newspaper novels in modern Korea, was a product of the intimate communication between the novelist Gu-bo and the illustrator Yi Sang, based on their close relationship.
