『한국불교전서』의 편찬과 과제 = The Compilation of the Han’guk Pulgyo chŏnsŏ (Complete Works of Korean Buddhism) and Future Challenges

The Han’guk Pulgyo chŏnsŏ (Complete Works of Korean Buddhism) is an enormous compilation of the entire literary output of the 1,700-year-old Korean Buddhist tradition, in 14 massive volumes, reflecting the ideologies, thought, culture, and very identity of Korean Buddhism. Contained within are commentaries on sutras and treatises; recorded Sŏn sayings, collections of koans and poems, travelogues, historical documents, inscriptions, and more.
This paper retraces the 30-year history of the chŏnsŏ, from plans first made in 1970 to the final volume in 2004. It examines the historical circumstances and needs that prompted its creation, as well as the central role played by figures such as Ko Ik-chin. It is clear that the chŏnsŏ was the fruit of deep devotion and determined effort to fulfil a long-standing desire of Korean Buddhist scholars.
This paper also reviews the schematic principles adopted in the current chŏnsŏ – the range and types of included texts and the selection of recensions. There are many points of improvement: basic tools such as an index are lacking, as well as deficiencies in text numbering, punctuation marks, and provision of digital services. Improving digital services in particular is of critical importance in enhancing the accessibility and utilization of the chŏnsŏ.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

『韓國佛敎全書』는 한국 불교 역사 속에 나타난 문헌적 성과의 집대성이다. 경전과 교학 율학 문헌에 대한 주석류, 선승들의 어록, 공안집, 게송, 여행기와 역사문헌, 비문, 시문, 한글 가사, 언해문 등 많은 다양한 문헌들이 수록되어 있다. 『한국불교전서』는 한국의 불교학계의 오랜 바램이 모여져서 1970년대 그 편찬의 계획이 수립되었고, 고익진 박사 등의 주도하에 1979년 첫권이 출간된 이래 2004년 마지막 14권이 발간됨으로써 30여년에 걸쳐 전 14권의 총서로 출간되었다.
본 논문은 『한국불교전서』의 편찬을 촉발시킨 당시의 사회적 학문적 배경과 편찬 과정을 살펴본 후에 그 편집 체재를 분석하여 수록 범위, 수록된 문헌의 종류, 문헌의 배열 방식, 선정과 교감 표식 등에 있어서의 원칙을 찾아보았다. 한편 이러한 특장점에도 불구하고 앞으로 색인 등 공구서가 개발되어야 하며, 일련번호, 구두점, 그리고 현재의 디지털 서비스에서 개선해야 할 점이 많음을 지적하였다. 현재 한국불교의 새로운 문헌들이 계속 발굴되고 있고 기존 입력 자료에 대해서도 지속적인 교감이 요구되기에 디지털 서비스를 개선하는 것이야 말로 현재의 한국불교전서의 활용성을 높이기 위한 가장 시급한 과제일 것이다.
