The cyber space is a virtual one, having a free access for all members of whom they do and can not know the origin by themselves. This point has occurred a core issue in the cyber space in comparison with the real world: identity. Much more intensive media too for constituting our gender identity than the real one, it permits us to exchange easily each other various ideas and sentiments concerning the gender issues. In these observations that we make everyday in the world, we can recognize finally that this cyber space would be appropriated by finding some aspects of juvenile gender identity.
Under two problems: 1) What kinds of gender contents the cyber facfics comprises and constitutes. 2) How do fanfics members react really to these gender contents, I investigated to juvenile gender identity in the cyber world. Having observed some fanfics choose and described gender problems appeared in facfics, I could explain characteristic aspects of gender identity and its value that affected to the young people.
Even though each research stage do not spring fresh into existence out of the other, my research process comprises 1) selecting two juvenile fan club sites in activity and taking typical fanfics in two kinds of sexual story genre in these club sites 2) appling a content analysis on its pure fanfic-data which three grand narrative categories divided in their intensive qualities; characters in internal, external and exchangeable relationship, spaces in private and public qualities and expressions of affection in mental and physical aspects, are given to 3) appling S. Hall's three categories of reading, adaption, resistance and compromising to the data's responses 4) interpreting the results.
The results as follow: 1) characters in internal relation are dominated in all fanfic-texts and high proportion of adoptive attitude in response to the characters is as well. The results show that the youth constitutes their gender identity by themselves or intimate persons surrounded, and confirm its real existence also by their own interrelation. This internal tendency of relation in personal affection is shown also in their indifference and insensitivity to the space. 2) Private spaces have not significant meaning for their affective-friendship relation but the publics are frequently visited. The space takes its dominated form in fanfics by spatial images imported from mass media. But this could be interpreted as the youth go into the real world exerting efforts to conciliate their imagination with their real realities in public space. 3) The affective expression in mental aspects is dominated. This result comes from the cyber protocol prohibiting substantial amount of sexually physical expressions and of nudity, and from some auto-controlling attitudes by fans themselves as well.
The gender identity in cyber world specially in fandom culture is characterized by continual interaction among the youth themselves, virtual circumstances and real world, dimensions in which the youth takes their sexual and gender form. They have been showing grand quality of real sensibilities in every category: interpersonal, inter-spatial and expressive in the mental and physical relation by encroaching on the virtual world, called fanfic, by self-control by themselves.
I conclude finally that the juvenile gender identity in cyber fanfic world constitutes and exchanges with their real persons, spaces and expressions. Their reactions and compromises against all other one are always go with the real reality that they feel and recognize as like it. The cyber world is an extension of real world; it is required to spend a long time until our mind shall be determined by techno-cyber culture.
