서구 고고학의 패러다임(paradigm) 변화와 한국 고고학의 방향 = Paradigm Shift in Western Archaeology and the Direction of Future Korean Archaeology

국문 초록 (Abstract)

서구 고고학의 패러다임은 1960년대까지 전통고고학, 1970년대 말과 1980년대 초까지 신 고고학 혹은 과정주의 고고학, 그리고 현금까지 후기과정주의 고고학으로 변모되어 오고 있다. 해방 후부터 출범한 우리나라 고고학은 그 역사가 아직도 일천하여 학문적 수준이 서구는 말할 것도 없고 심지어 일본의 고고학에 비해서도 낮은 것은 사실이다. 하지만 1970년대 들어와 한국의 고고학이 상당히 활성화되어 고고학자들의 수나 고고학 관련 연구업적이 괄목할 만큼 증가하였다. 이러한 추세는 당분간 지속될 전망이다. 이러한 상황에서 우리나라의 고고학도 유적조사를 실시함에 있어서 유물․유적의 수습과 단순 반복적 자료 집적의 차원을 넘어서 보다 더 의미 있는 고고학적 혹은 역사학적 해석에 초점을 맞추어야 할 시점에 왔다고 생각한다. 이 논문에서 서구에서 그 동안 변모하여 오고 있었던 패러다임을 간단하게 일별하여 보면서 한국 고고학의 상황과 대비시켜 보았다. 나아가서 한국 고고학의 근황을 살펴보고 앞으로 한국 고고학이 궁극적으로 발전하기 위해서 나아가야 할 방향을 제시하였다. 특히 서구의 이론과 방법론을 개인적인 습득과 학계에 단순히 소개하는 차원에서만 그칠 것이 아니라 이들을 적극적으로 수용하여 한국의 고고학 자료에 실제로 적용하여야 우리나라 고고학의 학문적 발전을 이룰 수 있다는 것을 강조하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The objective of this paper is to emphasize the importance of archaeological methods theories that have been formulated and widely used by Western archaeologists. Description of artifacts and features of archaeology and establishment of precise chronology are fundamental to archaeology. But it should not be an end in itself. By the same token, archaeological methods and theories should not be done for its own sake. Korean archaeology has made a significant, the economic growth in the 1970s witnessed many large scale construction works and concomitantly a great number of archaeological excavation sites throughout the country. Many unprecedented archaeological features have been exposed and a tremendous amount of artifacts have been recovered in many different sites. This has played a critical role for the development of Korean archaeology over the last three decades. Unfortunately, however, compared to the total amount of the archaeological work that has been done, the overall quality of Korean archaeological studies is still poor. This is mainly due to the fact that most Korean archaeologists have not had a strong desire to adopt appropriate archaeological methods and theories to interpret the materials collected. While the paradigms of the Western archaeology have shifted from traditional to interpret the materials collected. While the paradigms of the Western archaeology have shifted from traditional archaeology, to processual archaeology, and to post-processual, the academic atmosphere of Korean archaeology has not changed much until the present. In this paper, I contend that now is the time for us to pay close attention to the paradigm movement, and to try to apply methods and theories to interpret culture changes that took place in Korea.
