This research will discover the needs and thoughts of adoptees who grow up in different countries and examine their identities, then suggest some policies that government and adoption organizations can utilize to actively provide services to the adoptees to help them develop healthier identities.
The results of the study were shown as follows.
First there is a significant difference in adoptive parents' interest towards Korean culture, the adoptees' sense of loss, and their pride as a Korean, according to the timing of the adoption.
Second, adoptees have a very high sense of self-identity as a Korean. Adoptees who have visited their motherland scored higher in being aware of their being Koreans than adoptees who have never visited. This means that the adoptees' or their foster parents' awareness of Korean culture and their visiting Korea effect significantly the adoptees' formation of their self-identity.
From our survey, then, we can conclude that the self-identity of the adoptees who have visited their motherland are higher than the ones who have not, and that significant differences exist in the adoptees' sense of pride of being a Korean, their interest in Korean culture, their foster parents' attitude, their sense of loss due to their being adopted, according to the present age of the adoptees, their occupation, and the age at which they were adopted. Most of the adoptees surveyed expressed on negative views towards Korea or their biological parents, but rather showed strong desires to visit and learn more about Korea. Our government, therefore, needs to expand and diversify programs to assist overseas adoptees in visiting their motherland, and furthermore, needs to work more diligently to reduce the number of overseas adoptions from occurring.
