This study investigates the role of academic library's user education by reviewing previous researches conducted on information literacy of undergraduate students in Korea.
In order to find out whether the academic library's user education is needed to improve information literacy of undergraduate students, their information needs and information literacy are initially identified.
Previous researches revealed that 72% of questions raised by users are related to library regulations such as loan period, library open hours, renewal policy, and locations of specific materials, which could be easily answered by sign systems inside of libraries if they are properly equipped.
Academic library user's information literacy competency is found to be very poor to utilize useful research materials. They showed especially weakness in use of indexes and retrieving full-text of journal articles.
However, the effectiveness of academic library use education are found to be significant for improving user's information management skills.
This article suggests that academic libraries should employ both direct and indirect library use education. Indirect way of library use education should include effective sign systems and user friendly library interfaces.
Class oriented library use education is highly recommended for academic library users.
