의료 커뮤니케이션 개선을 위한 미술교육: 테이트 리버풀(Tate Liverpool)의 지역연계 프로그램 사례 연구 = Art Education for Improving Healthcare Communication: A Case Study of Community-based Program from Tate Liverpool

This study has focused on ‘Opening Doors’ program for healthcareprofessionals run by Tate Liverpool, one of the national galleries of art in U.K.
The aim of the study is to show main contents and outcomes of the program andto examine how art education contributes to improvement of patient-centeredcommunication that contemporary healthcare service seeks. The program has beenstructured upon ‘Five Ways to Well-bing’ promoted by the New EconomicsFoundation(NEF) and composed of creative and integrated educational activitieswith the focus of modern and contemporary artworks. As a result, the programhas empowered healthcare professionals to improve their personal well-being aswell as communication with their patients or service users by developing theirmultiple perspectives, sensitive awareness of others’ needs, active and openrelationships, reflective thinking skills, and decision-making skills. These majoroutcomes have several implications for medical education and healthcare service.
Firstly, educational programs specific to healthcare professionals is to be developedthrough integrating healthcare communication and visual arts. Secondly, integrativeand experiential approach to healthcare communication education is to developedthrough partnerships with art museums or cultural institutions in communities.
Thirdly, from the perspective of medical humanities, researches on the outcomes ofintegrating healthcare and visual arts are to be activated. Therefore, the study haspushed the boundaries of art education by showing its contribution to improvinghealthcare communication. The study also can be valued as an interdisciplinaryinquiry between healthcare and visual arts.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 영국의 국립미술관 테이트 리버풀(Tate Liverpool)이 의료·보건 전문인 대상으로운영해온 ‘오프닝 도어스(Opening Doors)’ 프로그램을 살펴보는데 초점을 맞추고 있다. 이 연구의 목적은 ‘오프닝 도어스’의 주요 내용과 성과를 제시함으로써, 미술교육이 현대 의료․보건 서비스가 추구하는 환자 중심 커뮤니케이션을 개선하는데 어떻게 기여할 수 있는지 고찰하는 것이다. ‘오프닝 도어스’ 프로그램은 영국의 신(新)경제재단(NEF)이 제시한 ‘웰빙의 5가지 비결(Five Ways to Well-being)’에 기초하여 근‧현대 미술 소장품을 중심으로 한 창의적이고 통합적인 교육 활동들을 제공하였다. 그 결과, 이 프로그램은 의료․보건 분야 전문인들에게 자신의 정신적·신체적 웰빙을 증진할 뿐 아니라, 의료․보건 실무에 필요한 다중적 관점, 타인의 필요에 대한 민감성, 능동적․개방적인 인간관계 능력, 반성적 사고, 의사결정 능력 등을 향상할 수 있었다. 이러한 주요 성과들은 국내 의학교육과 의료 서비스에 몇 가지시사점을 지닌다. 첫째, 의료 커뮤니케이션과 시각예술 분야의 협업을 통해 의료·보건 전문인을 위한 특화된 교육 프로그램을 개발하고, 교수진을 양성해야한다. 둘째, 지역 미술관이나문화예술 기관과의 파트너십을 통해 통합적, 체험적인 의료 커뮤니케이션 교육 방법을 시도해야 한다. 셋째, 의료인문학의 관점에서 의료와 시각예술 분야 간의 융합적 성과에 대한 연구를 활성화해야 한다. 이 연구는 미술교육을 통해 의료․보건 전문인의 커뮤니케이션 능력을 향상하고, 그들의 업무 역량을 강화할 수 있음을 제시함으로써 미술교육의 지평을 넓혔으며, 의료 분야와 시각예술 분야 간의 학제적 탐구로서도 가치가 있다.
