Abstract
This study aims to analyze the locational characteristics and spatial
composition of the former Jeju Provincial Government Building through
the application of Feng Shui (Pungsu-Jiri) principles and to identify its
geomantic significance. The study site is situated on a vital energy point- 107
(Hyeol) formed by a dragon vein (Yongmaek) originating from Hallasan
Mountain, the ancestral mountain (Taejosan) of Jeju, with Samseonghyeol
functioning as the protective front mountain (Ansan).
The findings are as follows.
First, the analysis of mountain formations revealed that the dragon vein
originating from Hallasan Mountain (1,947.3 m) extends northward, forms
Sanscheondan Soshinbong Peak (370 m), and continues to transmit vital
energy to the study site.
Second, the topographical analysis indicated
that Hallasan Mountain serves as the principal mountain (Jusan) and
Hyeonmu Peak of Jeju Island, while the incoming dragon vein and the
Cheongnyong and Baekho ridges harmoniously support the central dragon
vein.
Third, the analysis of the vital energy point showed that the dragon
vein descending from Hallasan undergoes transformation around Gosan
Dongsan, forming an energy basin (Ing) where vital energy is
concentrated. Samseonghyeol functions as an Ansan, gathering terrestrial
energy and creating a protected geomantic enclosure (Boguk)
characterized by a harmonious arrangement of the energy field, inner
bright hall (Naemyeongdang), and water system.
Fourth, the watercourse analysis demonstrated that Doksacheon Stream
to the west and Sanjicheon Stream to the east originate from Hallasan
and flow from south to north, creating a stable and favorable geomantic
water configuration.
Overall, the former Jeju Provincial Government Building is located on an
auspicious site where mountain formations, topography, and watercourses
are harmoniously integrated. The building’s spatial organization reflects- 108
the Feng Shui principles of balance and harmony among Heaven, Earth,
and Humanity.
This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the historical and
spatial value of the former Jeju Provincial Government Building as a
registered cultural heritage property through the perspective of Feng Shui
geography.
