사회과 교육의 본질에 대한 일 고찰 = A Study on the Essence of Social studies

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글에서는 21세기 사회과의 모습의 기반이 될 사회과의 본질은 무엇인가 하는 물음에 답하고자 하였다. 이를 위해서 우리 사회의 현실을 진단하고 이에 기초하여 사회과의 교과로서의 특성, 기르고자 하는 인간관, 교육과정 구성상의 특징을 살펴보았다. 이를 위하여 사회과를 둘러싼 미국과 일본의 최근의 논의, 과거에 있었던 사회과론 등을 분석하였다.
이러한 방법을 통하여 이 글에서는 사회과란 현재의 사회를 교육적 방법으로 개선하려는 교과이며 그 추구하는 인간상 또한 합리적인 방법에 의한 사회개선을 추구하는 사람이라는 것을 밝혔다. 이를 달성하기 위해서 사회과 교육과정은 하나의 문제를 중심으로 관련 학문의 지식이 통합되게 되며 이때 지식은 문제해결을 위한 도구의 성격을 갖는다는 것을 밝혔다.

What is the essence of social studies for 21st century?
To answer this question, I overviewed contemporary Korean society. And explored pattern of social studies and ideal person-type of social studies. And explored rational of social studies curriculum.
Korean society is rapidly changing and we need a social studies as a facilitator of changing democratic society. We need a social studies as problem solving subject of conflict of Korean society.
By Barr Bath Shermis there are three types of social studies. They are social studies as a cultural heritage, as a social science and as reflective thinking. And by Allen there are five types of person in social studies. They are The Conforming Person, The Personal Person, The Scholarly Person, The Public Person, The Radical Person. Ever though some scholar of U.S, Japan and Korea assert the type of cultural heritage and The Conforming person, I think reflective thinking and The Public Person model is apt for 21st Korea. Needlsss to say, there is variety from elementary to secondary school.
To reach this goal, social studies curriculum is to be social problem centered. And in Elementary school it is to be social function centered. In the context of social problem centered or social function centered social studies curriculum, history or geography is integrated into curriculum, as we see it in the Jurisprudential framework..
