Buddha-anussati (nianfo; 念佛) appears across a wide range of traditions within Indian Buddhism—from the Theravāda school to the scholastic studies of Abhidharma, and even among tantric practitioners. After Buddhism was transmitted to China, nianfo (念佛) came to influence nearly every sect, particularly Pure Land and Chan Buddhism. This trend continued not only through the late Tang (唐) and early Song dynasties (唐末宋初), but also persists in contemporary Korean Buddhist communities.
This study focuses on the emergence of the practice theory of wunian (無念, “no-thought”) in early Chan during the Tang dynasty (唐代). It aims to examine how this concept functions within the framework of nianfo (念佛) practice.
To begin with, the research confirms that in early Buddhist practice theory, sati-paṭṭhāna (四念處) functioned as an auxiliary path (助道), with sampajañña (正知) serving as a necessary condition. This was oriented toward achieving sammā-sati (正念), and it also had to align with the dharma-seal (法印).
Through this analysis, the study traces how practice theory developed after early Buddhism and how it evolved following its transmission to China. In the process through which various forms of chan (禪) and nianfo (念佛) practices emerged, doctrinal explanations for concepts like sampajañña (正知) were sometimes omitted.
Nonetheless, detailed discussions found in texts such as Huìyuǎn’s (廬山慧遠) White Lotus Society (白蓮結社) and in the Pure Land tradition’s teachings on exclusive nianfo (專修念佛) show that practice proceeds through a gradual strengthening of sati-indriya (念根) and sati-bala (念力), ultimately leading to sammā-sati (正念).
With the formation of the Chan (禪宗) monastic community, Dàoxìn’s (道信) teaching of the “samādhi of single practice” (一行三昧) borrowed the notion of mindfulness (念) from earlier practice theories but placed special emphasis on continuity (相續).
This development was later reframed as wunian (無念) by Huìnéng of Caoxi (曹溪慧能), a figure recognized for establishing Chan practice theory in its mature form. In this process, valid textual references were also confirmed.
The sectarian studies (宗學) of the Caoxi lineage continue to serve an important function today—not only in examining the increasingly diverse methods of practice across East and West, but also as guiding principles for the correct path (正道).
