David’s census in the OT is a story of God's grace flowing in the midst of the plague. In the background of this narrative, there are the covenantal curses of ‘sword, famine, and plague’ (Lev 26:25-26; Deut 28:21-34). These are repeated by the prophets, who have proclaimed that YHWH would bring the judgment of curse upon the Israelites if they broke God’s covenant (Jer 15:2; Ezek 6:11). Covenantal curses make society confused and life painful. In this regard, it is very meaningful for Christians living in the Corona era to look at the story of David’s census. In this paper, the author summarizes the theological functions and meanings of the two texts dealing with David’s census (2 Sam 24; 1 Chr 21), demonstrating that God’s grace is still continuing in the midst of the epidemic. When David had offered burnt-offerings to YHWH after the census, the plague ceased. David’s confession and intercession brought God’s gracious answer (2 Sam 24:25). But David’s census in Chronicles goes beyond this, proceeding to greater grace of God. Because the building place of God’s temple in near future is Ornan’s threshing floor. Thus, Chronicles concludes the story of David’s census with this verse: “This is the temple of the Lord God, and this is the altar of burnt offerings of Israel” (1 Chr 22:1). In spite of David’s sin of the census, God provides him a place to build an altar where the sin can be forgiven and appoints that place as the building site of the temple. Therefore, even though David’s census resulted in the death of many Israelites due to the plague, God’s grace continues in the midst of it, and it also foreshadows God’s atoning work in Jesus Christ.
