This paper addresses the basic study for the system design of multi-stage CNG(compressed natural gas) compressor for natural gas vehicles. Compressed natural gas is assumed to be an ideal gas, and pressure, volume and temperature of CNG are calculated according to the ideal gas theory. A compression cycle is assumed as a reversible adiabatic process. With given data such as total CNG compression ratio, capacity, suction pressure and temperature, the basic system parameters of CNG compressor, such as the number of stages and the cylinder diameter, are determined.
