Lots of studies have reported undesirable developmental outcomes of persistent poverty in childhood. Recently, several studies have examined the importance of self-esteem to weaken various effects of poverty. This present study aimed to develop and practice 10-week program for self-esteem in low-income children. The researcher developed the program based on prior studies and personal experience In social work practice. Then, she practiced the program for 8 school-aged children in poverty who enrolled after-school class in community social service center.
The most children evaluated the program positively, and the results showed a significant improvement in the self-esteem of participants. This study has some implications in that the after-school program for self-esteem can contribute to lessen undesirable developmental outcomes of childhood poverty.
