빈곤과 교육과의 관계: 대도시 영구임대아파트 거주 빈곤층 자녀들을 중심으로 = A study on the relationship between poverty and education

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글에서는 중산층이 주로 거주하는 지역 내에 설립된 영구임대아파트 단지와 이에 거주하는 학생들이 주로 다니는 초, 중, 고등학교를 중심으로 빈곤층 자녀들의 삶이 어떠한지를 지역, 학교, 가정, 아이들의 일상생활 수준에서 파악하는 가운데 빈곤하다는 것이 이들의 교육과 어떠한 관계를 지니는지 파악해 보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 초, 중, 고등학교 기초생활수급권자 학생과 그들의 부모, 교사, 학교장, 지역민들을 면담하고 면담 자료 보완을 위해 학생들의 학교생활을 제한적으로 관찰하였다. 연구 결과, 빈곤이 교육에 미치는 영향은 중층적임을 알 수 있었다. 빈곤 지역의 빈곤층 자녀들은 학교를 중심으로 중산층 자녀들과 분리되며 초등학교에서는 이들을 학교 내에 포용하려는 경향이 강하지만 상급학교로 갈수록 이들의 존재는 학교 생존에 위협이 되는 것으로 인식된다. 외형적으로 같은 조건에 있는 아이들이라도 저마다 다른 삶의 역사에 의해 현재 경험하는 양육방식이 모두 다르며 이는 그 상황에 있는 아이들과 가정에 나름의 의미를 지닌다. 중, 고등학교로 가면서 이들은 기대보다 낮은 학교성적에 의해 스스로 빈곤층임을 재확인하게 된다. 학교는 아이들이 보이는 나름의 관심에 주의를 기울이지 않는다. 이러한 연구 결과는 학력 획득 기회와 관련한 가정 역할 중심으로 빈곤과 교육과의 관계를 바라보는 관점을 재검토해 볼 필요가 있음을 시사해 준다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper is to understand the relationship between poverty and school education through investigating the characteristics of poor family children's lives in their community, schools, and families. For this purpose, I interviewed elementary, middle, high school students who live in permanent rental apartments which are in middle class area of a city. Their parents, homeroom teachers, school principles, and local residents are included as interviewees. The main idea from the analysis of those data is that the influences of poverty on education are multi-level. Poor children have been segregated from middle class children in their community and upper schools which poor children attend recognize them as threats against the schools' fame. Poor children with even the same physical family conditions have experienced different parents' upbringing styles which have some significance to them from the diverse families' life history. Poor children recognize that they are from poor class by school achievement scores, especially Math scores. Schools do not notice their own interests. This result requires reconsidering a thesis that poverty is reproduced through the elements of individual or family backgrounds, such as family structure, parents' upbringing style, and peer relationship. The thesis which overemphasize the influence of family background and do not consider that of community and schools can justify poverty.
