This paper is dessigned to survey foreign influences on Old English. Generally, Old English period begins from 450 to 1150. Like all divisions in history, the period of the English Language are matter of convenience, and the dividing lines between them are purely arbitary. But within each of the periods it is possible to recognize certain broad characteristics and certain special development that take place. The period from 450 to 1150 is known as Old English and sometimes described as the period of full inflections. Throughout the period of Old English which were spoken by Anglo-Saxons, it was influenced by three foreign elements such as Celtic, Latin, and Scandinavians. Consequently three foreign elements which gave influence on Old English are limited in this paper. Celtic contributed small number of words and most of place-names which preserved until today. Latin contributed large number of words compared with any other foreign elements and they are devided into three stages in Old English period such as the first stratum-mainly continental borrowing which Anglo-Saxons borrowed when they inhabited on the Northern Europe and before they settled in England, and second period are divided into two periods such as before 650 and after it. Words borrowed from Latin elements are mainly concerned with words which used in ordinary day life and with those of religion, learning and culture. As far as Scandinavian element is concerned, they also contributed words of daily life and most of place names and besides, some grammatical influences are given.
