According to ancient records, in Mahan(馬韓) in the age of Samhan(三韓), there were initiation rites in which boys’ backs were scratched and pierced to tie a string to drag some log, building their a clubhouse, “House of Youth.” In other words, it was a trial that made one man become a full adult. This type of coming-of-age celebration was universal not only in our country but also in other peoples. Though types of painful suffering were different in form and style, this means that it was included that physical maturity alone was not enough to regard a man as a full adult, who should have mental maturity.
Out of customs of Silla, Hwarang system can also be seen one kind of coming-of-age celebration. Furthermore, the story of『Tangun myth(檀君神話)』in which after 100 days in a cave with dried mugwort and garlic given to a bear and a tiger, the bear became a lady of the land called ‘Woongnyeo(熊女)’ and joined with Hwanwoong, the son of heaven, to give birth to Tangun(檀君) is also deduced as a kind of “initiation rites” that were celebrated in the ancient society of our nation.
