The purpose of this study was to examine quality in the open classroom through direct observation. The subjects were thirty two 3- and 4-year-old children enrolled in the Yonsei University Child Development Research Institute(CDRI) and their four teachers. Checklists based on Mayer(1971) were used to record observations of children's interactions and separate were developed to record teacher's behaviors. The data were collected through 192 10-sec time-sampled observations of individual children and teachers over a 4 week period and analyzed by percentage of frequency and MANOVA.
The results showed that the type of interactions in which most children were engaged differed by children's age. Main and interaction effects of age and sex of playmates were found un frequency of child-child interactions. The group size with which each teacher had the most frequent interactions was two to seven. The most frequent behavior of teachers was "Actively involved in children's play or activities" the most frequent verbal interaction between teacher and child was "Using open-ended questions to expand children's language ability and concepts".
It was concluded that Yonsei early open classroom meets standards for quality in the open classroom in terms of size and type of teacher-child interactions.
