Taxonomical and ecological survey on the vegetation of Keokeum Island was investigat ed from July, 1982 to June, 1984 and the results summarized as follows.:
The flora of this Island consists of 128 familes, 463 genera, 643 species, 78 varieties and 7 forma, and 730 species were investigated as a wlole.
Celtis choseniana, Corylopsis coreana, Carpinus tchonoskiivar. eximia and Tricyrtis dilatata, etc. that are known as the speciality Plants of Korea and Lilium, distichum, Giradina cuspidata and orostachys sikokianus etc. that are known as northern grosingdustried plant were investigated.
The island belongs to the warm tyemperate zone. 120 species of evergreen plants and 74 species of evergreen broad-leaved trees are distributed in the island. The reason way the island has more distribution of evergreen broad-leaved trees in the island than other islands is that they are planted as landscaping trees by the public organizations.
Before and after the year 1940, the flora destruction of this island was done by felling, fire and other human behaviors. The cause of flora destruction is due to the corrlation of population density in Yeonhong Island, Sanghwa Island, and Hahwa Island, in the guarry in Eojeon-ℓee, the top soil and groun vegetation were damaged heavily by taking out natural rock.
Such evergreen broad-leaved trees as Castanopsis cuspidata var. thunbergii, Machillus thunbergii and Ligustrum japonicum etc. in Jun Island, Daechi Island, and Sochi Island should be preserved, and Phyllostachys bambusoides, Caesalpinia japonica and Albizzia julibrissin in Keokeum Island and Machill us thunbegiis in Hongleyon area should also be under protection.
