In traditional Korea, there were lots of collective matches which we may call festivals these days. Among those collective matches, Dolssawum(Mock fight with stone missiles), Hoetbulssawum (Mock fight with torchlightes) and Juldaligi(Tug of War) were the most favored ones even though they are not much familiar to the people of modern times. However, the collective matches were disappeared through the Japanese imperial period. Therefore, this study was to research the decline process of the matches, concentrating upon Juldaligi. First of all, the status change of Juldaligi and the Japanese Joseon government``s mode of regulations was analyzed objectively through the press news materials. According to them, the stream of the Juldaligi held status was on temporary stoppage when it was prohibited in 1910``s. However, Juldaligi has met its heyday in late 1920``s after it was revived in early 1920``s, and it began to decline until it has been disappeared after 1937. Juldaligi wasn``t just exclusively declined and disappeared by the prohibition of the Japanese Joseon government. At least, there was a kind of renaissance period for the large-scale Juldaligi competition in 1920``s. In 1930``s, the frequency of the large-scale Juldaligi competition and the scale of the gallery declined, but there were still the large-scale matches existed. Of course the matches needed the Japanese Joseon government``s approval and they were banned for different reasons repeatedly. There was tension and confrontation among the colonial Japanese government, the Korean modern intellectual and the colonial people for the approval of the large-scale Juldaligi competition. The colonial people protested with complaining or expressing their anger to the police who tried to prohibit Juldaligi competitions or reduce the scale of them. However, not all the Korean modern intellectual and the colonial people supported traditional matches such as Juldaligi. Some modern intellectual who pursued modernity under the Japanese imperial period had kept criticized Juldaligi that it has been needed improvement. They also criticized that Juldaligi was just one of wasteful events under the view of the modern efficiency. The disappearance of Juldaligi has been influenced by the denial and derogation to the tradition by some Korean intelectual with modernity as well as the folklore regulation of the Japanese Joseon government.
