공대 여학생 사례를 통해 본 소수자의 사회심리학적 경험 = Women`s Deflection Feeling in Engineering Schools

This study explores social psychological experiences in identity construction process dealing with several women`s cases of an engineering school in the United States of America. Women`s social psychological experiences in the specific cultural context of engineering school demonstrate how they are actively engaged in considering engineer identity. By dividing knowledge system into two arenas-engineering vs. nonengineering and by perceiving gender content messages from others, women categorize themselves as person who studies wrong subjects in the wrong arena. This social psychological experience is called Deflection, an outcome of women`s identity recognition process. Deflection explicates engineering women`s social status in engineering school and it also indicates the conflict between femininity and engineering within women. In terms of this, deflection feeling also suggests women to investigate gender identity. Engineering women are struggling to construct their own femininity as engineer in behaviors, attitudes, clothing, dating, and language.
