This study investigates the effect of potential incomplete acquisition of Korean anaphor binding by Korean heritage speakers residing in China. The study focuses on the interpretation of the Korean local anaphor caki-casin when it is forced to be bound long-distance. 51 Korean heritage speakers residing in China, together with 41 Korean monolinguals in Korea, were tested over Korean sentences representing the LD exempt binding of the local anaphor caki-casin. The task used was a Grammaticality Judgment Task paired with Preferential Sentence Interpretation. The results showed that both Korean heritage speakers and Korean monolinguals accepted LD bound local anaphor caki-casin when appropriate logophoric conditions are present. However, Korean heritage speakers differed from the monolinguals in their failure to be sensitive to subtle logophoric conditions involved in exempt binding, which may result from incomplete acquisition. The results of the study seem to imply that properties from Universal Grammar (UG) and language-specific interface properties are treated differently in heritage language acquisition.
