This study aims to examine the degrees of understanding among teachers of the nuri process for 5-years old children, degrees of implementing it, and elements of obstacles in implementing the process. To achieve such aims, this study set up the following research questions.
1. What are the degrees of understanding among teachers of the nuri process for 5-years old children?
2. What are the degrees of implementing it among teachers?
3. What are obstacles in implementing it?
The objects of this study are the 141 teachers taking charge of classes for 5-year old children in child care centers located in Gyeonggi province and Incheon city. Research tools of this research are the revised and complemented ones of the followings to suit the purpose of this research: the nuri process for 5-year-old children, concrete educational contents per part for the nuri process for 5-year-old children, the guideline and explanation book for the nuri process for
5-year-old children which contain concrete explanation for the process (Ministry of Health and Welfare, 2011), Hae-mi Jeon (2012), Hun-hi Lee (2008), Hyeon Ham (2009), and Hyo-sun Lee (2007).
The data of this study were analyzed using frequencies and percentiles, t-test, and One Way ANOVA, etc. They were analyzed with the SPSSWIN 12.0 program.
The specific analytic processes were as follows.
First, frequencies and percentiles were calculated to examine the general characteristics of research objects.
Second, technical statistics methods like mean and standard deviation were used for the degrees of understanding about the nuri process among teachers, of xecuting the process, and of obstacles in implementing the process.
Third, to examine the differences in the degrees of understanding, of implementingit, and of obstacles in implementing the process, t-test and OneWay ANOVA, which are used to test the differences of means, were applied.
Forth, to examine the relations of understanding of nuri process amongteachers, of implementing it, and of obstacles in implementing the process, correlation analyses were done.
The findings of this research are as follows. First, among all aspects of the nuri process, teachers usually understood the characteristics of each part of the nuri process the most, and they did the purpose and contents of each part of it well. On the other hand, relatively speaking, they did not understand the evaluation of
the nuri process well. According to the study of Hae-mi Jeon (2012), teachers lack full understanding of 'the basic direction of the evaluation of the 5-year old nuri process', which corresponds to the findings of this study to some extent. There were some differences in the degrees of understanding about the nuri process among teachers depending on their background variables. The higher the educational levels of teachers are, and the longer they have worked as teachers, the better they understood the nuri process, which correspond to the findings of Hi-ja Jo (2011) and Soo-mi Jeong (2009). And, among the teachers who possess the certificate of child care teacher grade1, those who work in state- or public-owned facilities were found to understand the process better than others. This finding corresponds to the findings of Hyeon Ham (2009) and Han-eun Lee (2008) on the
understanding among teachers on standard child care process to some
extent.
Second, there are some parts of implementing the nuri process, In physical exercise and health area, to lead a healthy life was found to be implemented the best. Teachers were found to do well the followings in descending order: physical regulation, doing basic exercise, to lead a safe lifestyle, being conscious of body and participating in physical activities. In the communication area, hearing was implemented the best, and they did well the followings in descending order: writing, reading, and speaking. In the social relations area, living with other people was implemented the best, and next ones were adjusting my attitude knowing my feeling and other's feeling, knowing me and respecting me, respecting family members, attending social issues in descending order. In the artistic experience area, what the teachers do well were searching for beauty, expressing artistically, and appreciating arts. In the nature exploration area, cultivating attitude of nature exploration and to do mathematical exploration were high, and to explore scientifically was the next one. In the degrees of implementation of all areas, the communication area was found to be the highest, and the next ones in descending order are the physical exercise and health area, social relations area, and artistic experience area, and, finally, nature exploration area. Such findings coincide with research results of Han-eun Lee (2008) and Hyo-soon Lee (2008) to some extent.
Third, among the obstacles in implementing the nuri process for 5-years old children teachers are conscious of, what the teachers pointed out the most was the fact that, since they have too much work to do, they don't have enough time to implement it. The next ones in descending order were insufficient supply of materials and teaching tools, too high ratio of teacher versus students, ambiguity of the nuri process and insufficiency of concrete method of applying it, and insufficiency of teacher education like working training and workshop, etc. The finding that teachers point out most frequently the fact that, since they have too much work to do, they don't have enough time to implement it is corresponding to the results of Han-eun Lee (2008) and Hyeon-jin Kim (2011). Among the answers in all areas, the area where teachers do not have enough time to implement the nuri process was the physical exercise and health area. The area where teachers lack activity materials and teaching tools the most was the nature exploration area. The area where the teacher should take charge of the largest number of students was in the nature exploration area.
