The revised Ministry of Construction (MOC) standard plans for highway slab bridge sections are analyzed and compared with optimum design section, according to the current requirement.
The following observations are made;
1. In using material, The optimum design section is showed more economical than the MOC standard section.
2. The MOC standard plans does not utilize fully the capabilities of materials, of exceeds the allowable values.
e.q.: Working stress of steel and concrete show significant amount of allowance(13 to 15% in the span 8 and 10m, while in the span 10m and 12m, the steel show 5 to 6%, and the concrete shows 1% to 4% exceedingly in comparison with the allowable values.)
3. The distributor bars of the MOC standard plans are used ver 31 to 213% and contain some obvious discrepancies in details.
e.q.: Distributor bars are either over under placed, and main reinforcements are placed inside the distributors to reduce the effective depths of the given sections.
This indicates that the MOC standard plans are far from optimal and have plenty room to improve under the provailing design conditions.
