Discussion network consists of social ties to others with whom people talk over important matters in everyday life in times of trouble. With data from national surveys conducted in 2002 and 2011, the current study examines the composition and structure of core discussion networks of Korean adults aged 30s or younger and their determinants and then cluster-analyze the 2011 core discussion networks. First, family/kin members and schoolmates/alumni have been consistently the most significant others, with neighbors and acquaintances from various social activities less important over the last ten years. The core composition varies according to socio-demographic factors, but it has rarely changed over time. It is most seriously affected by marital status, and the relative importance of marital status and whether to have a job has become greater. Second, discussion networks are considerably closed with strong ties between ego and alters, with a marked tendency of homophily by sex, age, and education. The proportion of family/kin has had the highest leverage on network properties, followed by: sex on network density; marital status on the kin proportion and age heterophily; employment status on tie duration; and four-year university degree on network size, contact frequency, and educational heterophily. Lastly, the core discussion networks are distinguishable into a kin-centered cluster and three non-kin based ones. What type of personal community networks to belong to is significantly affected not only by sex and marital status and also by employment status, four-year university degree, subjective identification of social strata, and the perception of residential area. Overall, there will be likely in the near future growing diversification and stratification of psychological and social support networks of young Korean adults due to social and economic issues critical for them hard to be solved.
