This study investigates longitudinal changes in the use of hedging expressions in academic writing by advanced Chinese learners of Korean, offering qualitative interpretations of the underlying reasons and contextual factors. Prior research has primarily focused on descriptive analyses of learner texts or isolated indices, making it difficult to determine whether observed changes reflect shifts in frequency, repertoire expansion, or improved accuracy. Addressing this limitation, the present study examines hedging through a multidimensional lens—encompassing frequency, diversity, accuracy, and functional distribution—while comparing heterogeneous learner trajectories via cluster analysis and using interview data to explain quantitative patterns.
Employing an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, the study first analyzed learner texts longitudinally to calculate frequency, diversity, and error rates, using native-speaker texts as a baseline. Subsequently, cluster analysis of individual trajectories identified distinct learner types. Representative learners from each cluster were then interviewed to qualitatively analyze their perceptions and experiences.
Major findings reveal that hedging development did not follow a single linear growth curve. Frequency and diversity were not consistently aligned; early stages showed increased frequency without repertoire expansion, while later stages exhibited decreased frequency alongside increased diversity. Second, while accuracy improved gradually, error profiles shifted as total errors decreased. Omission remained a persistent issue, whereas overuse and inappropriate selection became more salient in later stages, underscoring ongoing difficulties in contextual judgment and strength calibration. Third, cluster analysis identified five learner types: Accuracy Refinement, Expansion–Control, Expansion–Adjustment, Late Recovery, and Atypical Case. The distinct patterns observed across these clusters demonstrate that hedging development cannot be reduced to a single trajectory. Interviews suggest these variations stem from factors such as genre awareness, L1 transfer, risk avoidance in evaluative contexts, and accumulated feedback.
The study offers two pedagogical implications. First, instruction must go beyond expanding lexical repertoires to explicitly teach criteria for hedging necessity and principles for calibrating epistemic strength. Second, rather than focusing solely on frequency, instruction should diagnose diversity and functional distribution to reduce reliance on limited expressions, while providing feedback that simultaneously monitors omission and overuse. This study contributes to the field by empirically integrating multiple dimensions of hedging proficiency with cluster-specific trajectories and contextualizing quantitative findings through qualitative inquiry.
