This paper has presented an approach to the design of simple medical expert system for general patient. Therefore, this study is comprised of three modules: medical knowledge base, local knowledge base and inference engine. The emphasis was on simple patient management as a whole. Two knowledge models were used to compare general symptoms of disease with symptoms shown by patient. The former was named as medical knowledge base, the latter as local knowledge base. The inference engine was developed to calculate probability of disease step by step by using baysian formula. The result was more or less successful. However. this system does not include a registry to register patients and therapeutic options. For complete system environment, educational module for patients and their families for self care using tutorial and encyclopedia about diseases need to be included. Furthermore, there is scope for improvement in the user interface aspect of the program, to make it more idiot-proof, more convenient to use, and generally more user-friendly. These field of studies are left for further consideration. Even if this system was given a realistic knowledge base and was modified to have an excellent user interface, there is one final point which ought to be borne in mind. It would be rather dangerous to allow a computerised diagnosis system like this to be used instead of a doctor, even as a screening device, so that a patient does not get to see the doctor personally. With a computerised diagnosis system, who would be legally liable in the event of a serious misdiagnosis? If the law permitted the use of such a system instead of seeing a doctor personally, then strictly speaking it would be the firm who provides the computer system who would be liable. But no sensible insurance firm would insure a computerised disgnosis system against charges of negligence or incompetence. This is becoming a major problem for computer system suppliers, since in general it is impossible to guarantee the correct operation of a complex computer system.
