뒤르케임과 지성인

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 뒤르케임의 사회학이 그의 지성인다움과 뗄 수 없게 얽혀 있다는 논지를 펼친다. 먼저 내가 벨라를 통하여 뒤르케임의 사회학과 만났던 것과 뒤이어 그러한 사회학에 관심을 두어온 우리나라의 젊은 사회학자들을 만났던 것을 뒤돌아보면서, 뒤르케임의 사회학이 우리의 사회학에서 특별한 자리를 지켜왔다는 것을 새겨본다. 이어, 뒤르케임이 합리스런 `개인`중심의 인식론을 거부하고 `사회` 중심의 인식론을 내놓을 때 그가 쓴 `사회`라는 말은 근본의 뜻에서 `도덕`이라고 이해한 점을 지적하여, 그가 어떻게 도덕성의 문제와 평생 씨름을 해왔는지를 살펴본다. 아울러 그가 독일에 잠시 머물고 있을 때 `전체성`을 강조한 독일 사회과학을 접하였으며 그 뒤에 가서야 주요 저작을 내놓기 시작했다는 점도 밝힌다. 이후 그가 추구한 도덕 사회학의 과제와 그 지향성 때문에 `드레퓌스 사건`이 일어났을 때 그를 변호하기 위하여 연구실에서 뛰쳐나오지 않으면 안 되었다는 점을 논구한다. 여기서 뒤르케임의 사회학은 학문에 대한 헌신과 지성인된 의무감을 동시에 요청할 수밖에 없는 것이라는 것을 강조한다. 이러한 학문 관심은 오랫동안 화해할 수 없다고 여긴 `학문`과 `참여`라는 두 세계를 연결하여 새로운 지성인의 유형을 만든 특유한 시도였다. 그의 탄생 150돌을 새기며 이 글은 오늘날 우리나라 사회학의 상황과 그와 이어진 지성 풍경을 성찰하며 마무리한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In this article I argue that Durkheim`s commitment to sociology is entwined with his intellectual struggle for the moral integration of Third Republic France. By looking back on my encounters with Durkheim`s sociology, through my intellectual connection to Bellah and later through meeting young Korean scholars of Durkheim during my teaching career, I show that Durkheim`s sociology has continued to be a distinctive part of sociological discourse in Korea. Turning to the formation of Durkheim`s own sociology to sketch how he came to focus on his lifelong struggle with morality by pointing out that what he meant by `social` is `moral` in a fundamental sense and that he rejected rational-individualistic epistemology. I note that he began producing major works only a few years after his sojourn in Germany where he had met its social science which tended to assert holistic strains. I move on to discuss the way that his sociology of morality led him to come out for the defense of Dreyfus, stressing that his sociology demanded simultaneously an academic commitment and intellectual obligation. Durkheim`s sociology was a unique attempt to bridge two worlds of scholarship and engagement with moral issues that have been long regarded as irreconcilable, and to formulate a new type of intellectual. In commemorating the sesquicentennial of the birth of Durkheim, I conclude this article with some reflections on Korean sociology and its intellectual landscape today.
