This thesis deals with the theme of grief in May Art. Both the bereaved mother and other people in Gwangju were in deep sorrow because of the May 18th Democratic Uprising in 1980. Especially, the art works focus on the grief of parting will rouse the present meaning of the tragic separation, death, grief and so on. At the early 1980s, Artists strove to let Koreans know the fact of the May 18th Democratic Uprising by way of paintings and woodcut prints. So their works emphases on the resentments against the military authorities who suppressed the civil uprising. After the late 1980s, works on Gwngju Uprising express their emotions with the share of grief and the repose of souls. These art works were the background of people`s rage and artists` sympathy against historical violence. The image of May`s grief frames not the representation of memory but the object of fine arts by way of many kinds of artistic forms. The image of men, such as fathers, friends, fellows, represents the determination of revenge. On the contrary, the image of women, such as mother, elder sisters, represents the social grief as a minorities. More over, using the image of moon, petal and documentary photos, these art works accentuate the tragedy of the May 18th Democratic Uprising in 1980. Both the artists of May Arts and many amateurs` circles at Universities had produced many works during the 20 years. These works will induce to remind the meaning of people`s uprising in 1980`s and will help to mourn for the victims. It is the overcoming process of the mental debits to the dead. Through the disclosure of covered memory and truth, these art works call for the conquest of mental trauma of the survivors.
