민주주의·미디어체제의 유형화

국문 초록 (Abstract)

많은 비판에도 불구하고 ‘언론의 4이론’은 미디어체제 비교연구에 오랜 기간 논의의 기초 역할을 했다. 이러한 예로 보아 민주주의와 미디어 사이의 다양한 관계를 논의하는 데에도 기초적 모델이 필요하다. 그러나 기존의 연구들은 민주주의 분류가 자의적이고, 개별 민주주의에 상응하는 미디어의 기능 또한 모호해 어떤 민주주의가 어떤 기능과 뉴스 표준을 필요로 하는지가 분명하지 않았다. 따라서 이 연구에서는 검증된 기준에 따라 민주주의를 분류하고, 미디어체제와 공론장의 유형에 관한 기존 연구를 이에 맞게 재범주화해 시장자유주의, 자유다원주의, 공적·참여주의, 사회운동·대안 등의 네 가지 모델을 제시했다. 그리고 실제의 비교연구에 이를 적용, 그 타당성을 검토했다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Despite several severe criticisms for its liberal bias and lack of pluralism, Four Theories of the Press has played a guiding role in the works on categorizing national media systems around the world. In the field of media-democracy relationships, we don’t have such a normative model yet partly due to the diverse ways of defining democracies and the contending criteria for classifying them. This seems to have been the main obstacle for systematic comparison of media systems and public spheres across national boundaries and, hence, for comprehensive understanding of the political functions of the media in different types of democracies. Aiming to meet the increasing need for a typological normative model in the field of media-democracy relationships, this study proposes four major types of democracies for understanding media functions - market liberalism, liberal pluralism, public participation, social activist-alternative. While drawing on re-categorization of existing works in the field based on such criteria as legitimacy, participation and ethical regulation, this typology is structurally similar to the three models of media and politics suggested by Hallin and Mancini(2004) and the radical democratic model by Curran(2002).
