Ceramic art has been breathing with human life for a long time in the form of art expressed by the material called ‘clay’ and various making processes. Therefore, it is one of the artistic areas based on traditional methods of expression and can not be excluded. Due to these characteristics, the way of expressing ceramic arts in the past was extremely limited, therefore diversity was somewhat lacking than in other artistic areas. However, the expression aspect of contemporary ceramic art is based on the understanding of the material and the traditional making method, but it induces the expansion of expression by creating various visual approaches and discourses. The expansion of expression mean that can understand and accept the clay material qualities and making process. This means that ceramic can express but cannot be expressed in the other field of arts. This research explores the ways in which extended expression that focused on the workmanship which is the essential and primitive in the making process.
According to the Dictionary defined the workmanship is the skill with which something was made or done. But the British craftsman and theorist David Pye defined the workmanship as influencing the behavior of the worker based on the knowledge of the technique and the skill, rather than merely the skill. Pye categorized about workmanship that is workmanship of certainly and workmanship of risk. Workmanship of certainly means that the outcome of a created object is a perfect reproduction of a pre-planned such as form, color and size. The workmanship of these results is always regulated and controlled by the planners. Completely made products are pre-fabricated by prototype before production, making it a thing to complement the problems based on it. Workmanship of risk, on the other hand, is the result of an operator being careless or mistaken of an action or an accident of the moment, which is imperfect, that is, rough, unsophisticated or unsuccessful. Therefore, this study aims to examine how the risk of workmanship is expressed and discussed in contemporary ceramics in the development of workmanship of risk based on Pye theory. This is a presentation of the aesthetic value and future possibilities of workmanship of risk from manual work that can be neglected in the digital age. This aesthetic value and futuristic possibility presentation will be examined through works of crafts, paintings, sculptures and contemporary ceramic artists.
