Assessment of Agricultural Literacy and Attitude toward Agriculture among School Teachers in Young-nam Area

Understanding agriculture appropriately and having positive attitude toward agriculture is very important, so the agricultural literacy has become an issue in Korea. Assessing agricultural literacy, however, has been done in only few time and decade ago. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to assess the knowledge of and attitude toward issues related to agriculture, food, and the environment of elementary and secondary school teachers in Young-nam area.
The sample for this study consisted of 236 teachers in elementary, middle, and high school in the Young-nam area. A pilot test was conducted to clarify the items of the data collection instruments. Descriptive statistics, a t-test, and an ANOVA with an a priori alpha level of .05 were utilized to answer research questions.
Based on the results of the study, conclusions of the study were as follows: 1. the education about agriculture, general agricultural education, should be reinforced and expanded in every level of public school education system.; 2. when design the education on agricultural knowledge and experience, it should include all aspects of agriculture so that it helps students possess propound understanding of agriculture and get more positive attitude toward agriculture.
