The purpose of this paper is to examine the early way of collecting knowledges in Yeonam group, and to analyze the fusion of various knowledge systems which appeared in Yunhoemaesipjeon(1768) written by Lee, Deok-mu.
In terms of that Yunhoemaesipjeon clearly includes the characteristic knowledge editing and information generation process of Yeonam Group, Yunhoemaesipjeon is a remarkable work, and this work is also a good example of knowledge editing that could lead to the creation of other writings within members of Yeonam Group.
One of the most distinctive features of Yunhoemaesipjeon is that this work is composed of the Jeon(箋) method. Meaning to make a complete brochure about waxy plum blossoms, Lee arranged ten of jeon, which is individual and organized structure that were appropriate for his purpose.
Furthermore, the ten of jeon helped to facilitate the fusion of various knowledge systems imported from Qing in the late Joseon Dynasty. For example, The 19 types of waxy plum blossoms in Yunhoemaesipjeon refered to the Sancai tuhui(三才圖會) or the luo fu huan zhi(羅浮幻質), both of them containing same manual of painting plum tree. As for how to make waxy plum blossoms, he applied the traditional technique of drawing plum trees as shown in Jie zi yuan hua zhuan(The Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting, 芥子園畵傳).
It can be read the proudness of Yeonam Group who could recall the witty literary idea with the insignificant material, the waxy plum, and design and instantiate a work like Yunhoemaesipjeon. Therefore, the interesting feature of Yunhoemaesipjeon is not just playful but also very serious. For example, gujigwon(九之券) is a witty article made with reference to a contract of sales in Yunhoemaesipjeon. Not only gujigwon guarantees fun, but also the utility of the information editing work they perform.
In conclusion, Yunhoemaesipjeon is an example of that a young Lee edited as a comprehensive art work reflecting his vast reading experience. It is also a work that triggered similar intellectual activities within Yeonam group, and it is an exemple case of knowledge editing by Lee in the early days of his companionship with Park, Ji-won.
