An Interpretation of Adolescents’ Discursive Constructions of Health and Physical Fitness: An Exploration of Korean-Canadian Youths

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 청소년들이 건강과 체력에 대한 개념을 어떻게 이해하고 이를 위해 무엇을 실천하는가를 알아보는데 그 목적이 있다. 구체적으로, 이 연구는 한국계-캐나다 청소년들이 어떠한 방식으로 주류 건강 및 체력담론을 받아들이고, 그것을 자신의 것으로 의미화하여 생활에서 실천하는가하는 담론적 의미구성 및 그 실천과정을 이해하는데 초점을 맞추고 있다. 본 연구의 문제제기와 자료 수집 및 해석의 논리적 근거는 후기구조주의 이론과 후기구조주의 페미니즘의 영향과 도움을 받았다. 방법론적 측면에서, 본 연구는 근거이론에 기초하여 9명의 한국계-캐나다 청소년들과의 심층면담자료를 28개월에 걸쳐 수집, 해석하였다. 연구 결과, 청소년들은 서구 앵글로색슨계의 주류 건강담론을 적극적으로 수용하고 있으며, 자기 자신만의 건강 및 체력담론을 구성하는 과정에서도 이를 적극 활용하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 구체적으로, 청소년들의 건강 및 체력담론은 주류건강담론에서 뚜렷하게 강조하고 있는 외모와 자기규제로서의 신체활동을 중요한 건강 및 체력담론으로 구성하였다. 먼저, 성별에 따라 몸이 어떻게 달라져야 하는가를 강조하였고, 인종 및 한국문화의 영향은 배제하거나 저항하는 방향으로, 주류 비만담론에 밀접하게 관계되어 체중 및 신체의 모양과 외모에 중점을 두고, 육체적인 개념으로 몸과 관련된 것으로, 건강에 대한 개인의 책임을 강조하는 방향으로, 그리고 건강과 체력개념이 혼용될 수 있는 것으로 담론화하였다. 이들 담론의 수용, 체화, 실천 및 저항의 권력관계에서 아시아계 학생에 대한 인종적 고정관념이 큰 역할을 하는 것으로 나타났는데, 모범적 소수인종이라는 고정관념에서 비롯된 기대수준은 청소년의 주체적 자아형성에 일종의 제약으로 작용하였다. 이런 측면에서, 건강과 체력의 실천은 재정적 뒷받침, 시간사용 및 자기규율이라는 측면에서 많은 비용이 들지만 한국계-캐나다 청소년들에게 건강과 체력의 실천은 캐나다 사회에 대한 일원으로서의 소속감과 그 문화에 성공적으로 적응하고 있다는 느낌 및 주체적 자아형성의 지식 및 실천체계를 제공하고 있는 것으로 나타났다.
