해외선교의 정치학과 영적 제국주의: 대형교회를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 최근 한국 개신교의 해외선교가 지닌 성격을 선교의 정치학과 영적 제국주의를 중심으로 분석한다. 현재 한국 개신교는 미국 다음으로 많은 선교사를 해외에 파송하고 있는 제2위의 선교대국이며 2010년 현재 2만명이 넘는 선교사가 해외에서 활동하고 있다. 그런데 이러한 해외선교붐을 주도하고 있는 것은 대형교회이다. 2000년대 접어들어 한국 개신교는 교세 감소 현상을 보이고 있는에 이러한 내적 위기를 탈출하기 위한 효과적 방안의 하나로 해외선교가 선택되었다고 볼 수 있다 . 해외선교를 주도하고 있는 대형교회들은 막대한 인적 물적 자원을 동원하여 해외 종교시장을 개척하고 있는데 이는 교회확장의 효과만이 아니라 신자들의 종교적 정체성을 강화시키는 역할도 수행하고 있다.
그런데 한국 개신교의 해외선교는 선교지에서 많은 문제를 일으키고 있다. 선교사들이 선교지의 문화와 종교를 공감적으로 이해하고 대화의 대상으로 삼기보다는 지배와 정복의 대상으로 삼는 승리주의의 에토스를 보이고 있기 때문이다. 한 세기 전 서구선교사들이 '문명화 선교'를 통해 노정하였던 문화 제국주의의 오류를 오늘의 한국 개신교가 선교지에서 그대로 반복하고 있는 것이다. 서구 기독교는 과거의 선교 제국주의를 청산해가고 있는 반면, 새로운 선교강국으로 부상한 한국 개신교는 낡은 선교 패러다임을 그대로 고수하고 있다. 이처럼 오늘날 대형교회를 중심으로 활성화되고 있는 한국 개신교의 해외선교는 선교의 정치학과 영적 제국주의로 특징으로 하고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This research aims to explore the characteristics of foreign mission by Korean protestant churches, focusing on mega-churches. Thesedays, in Korea, mega-churches play the major role in propagation of Gospels to foreign countries. The reason why Korean protestant churches, especially mega-churches, commits to sending so many missionaries abroad is to overcome the recent crisis in domestic churches. Since the 2000s, the member of Korean protestant believers is decreasing steadly. Korean protestantism, therefore, is trying to solve the domestic problem by animating the foreign mission. Korean church leaders urge laymen to take a short-term foreign mission, which could be a means of reinforcing the laymen's faith.
On the other hand, Korean foreign missionaries is not free from the cultural or religious imperialism. While western missionaries tend to get over the Christian imperialism, Korean missionaries reproduce the "civilizing mission", a product of western protestantism in the 19th century, in their own way. Korean protestant foreign mission aims at the spiritual conquer of the native religions and cultures rather than the dialogue with the other religions. In short, Korean missionaries are deeply in the spiritual imperialism.
