The karst landform is located in the elevation of 450m to 625m at the region of Pyoung-Chang in Gang-Won Province. This study has investigated the karst morphology and soil characteristics. The kerst landform, which distributed at a high elevation, is developed from Jeong-Seon limestone of Paleozoic era as a bed rock for the region of Sanganmiri. The result of the study are as follows; The doline of the region of Sanganmiri is distributed at an elevation of 515m to 625m, and the relative elevation is 130m to 250m. It has formed a compound doline along the ridges along the south-east sides of the mountain range. The diameter of the doline is in a NW-SE direction, the diameter is 45m to 95m, and depth is 5m to 16m. The plane form of the doline is a round, oval form and the section form takes a bowl or funnel form. The development of lapies is weak. As a result G. A. Brook`s theory of karst landform classification maybe applied the area in this study. Mid-depth, deep and cockpit doline karst emerged. It can be seen that the classification form of doline of both areas is the same to some degree. The thickness of the soil profile ranges from 80㎝ to 180㎝ and the horizon of A1 is 10㎝ to 25㎝ in thickness and the silt clay loam is dark-brown(7.5YR 4/4) or reddish-brown(5YR 4/4). The soil structure is a granular structure and easily friable and its sticky and plastic. The horizon of B is a silt loam of Yellowish-red( 5YR 4/6). The soil structure is a subangular blocky structure and the degree of development is medium. The higher the relative elevation, the more leaching is active so the content of SiO₂ is very high but the content of AI₂O₃, Fe₂O₃ is low. Soil value is neutral or slightly acid. The content of silt is high. SiO₂/R₂O₃ in the region of Sanganmiri is 5.0 to 5.8. it is 3.19 to 7.12. - By an XRD analysis, clay minerals of quartz and mica can be detected to a great extent but clay minerals of kaolinite and smectite is detected only a little bit. In conclusion, the karst landform soil in the region of Sanganmiri, as identified by the above criteria, have been considered to be zonally distributed on the gentle slopes and hills in the karst landform of the region of Yeongweol and Danyang. The red soils are not always confined to the karst landform in the region. They apparently extend to the plains and the gentle hill slopes on granitic rocks. According to the pedogeomorphological characteristics of these soils indicate that the lower part of soil (B horizon)is an ancient red soil that was formed during warmer stage of Pleistocene or plio-Pleistocene time. It may be concluded that most reddish soils in the karst landform of South Korea are ancient red soils, fossil red soils and the rest exhumed or relict red soils..
