      This study set out to investigate Choi Chi-won’s perceptions of King Gyeongmun’s royal family during the lattet period of Silla in terms of succession to the throne, qualities of the king, and operation of the political situations, as well as his own ideas of those aspects.
      First examined were his perceptions of succession to the throne by the kings from King Gyeongmun’s royal family and his ideas of ideal succession to the throne. He had an overall positive perception of succession to the throne by King Gyeongmun, Heongang, Jeonggang, and Jinseong on the grounds that King Gyeongmun and Jinseong had the abilities and talents required from a king, that King Heongang ascended to the throne in a legitimate way as the Crown Prince, and that King Jeonggang succeeded to the throne as the younger brother of King Heongang, which was deemed to be legitimate under the political conditions at that time by Choi.
      Then his perceptions of the qualities of the kings from King Gyeongmun’s royal family were examined along with his ideas of the most ideal qualities of a king. He thought that King Gyeongmun was a monarch with such virtues as frugality and humbleness, that King Heongang was a literary man and weak monarch that listened carefully to loyal remonstrances and cared for the people, and that King Jinseong was an invalid monarch that obtained royal virtues and had no personal greed. Choi believed that an ideal monarch would rule the nation with perfect virtue and educate the people through filial piety, which embodies the idea of benevolent royal government.
      Finally, his perceptions of the ways the kings from King Gyeongmun’s royal family ran the political situations were examined along with his ideas of the most ideal ways. He perceived that King Gyeongmun actively introduced the Chinese systems to implement the Confucian political ideology and worked hard on the reorganization of government offices and the policy of recruiting talents, thus doing virtue-based politics. He believed that the entire nation enjoyed peace under the rule of King Heongang, who reformed politics by carefully introducing the Chinese culture and systems, placed importance on talents, and accepted admonitions well. Silla was in the face of all kinds of hardship and disaster at the same time during the reign of King Jinseong, being driven to the verge of collapse. Choi saw that King Jinseong actively dealt with the hardships and disasters and did his best to overcome them. Choi regarded King Jinseong as a monarch who had the abilities to carry out his ideas about the operation as a monarch who had the abilities to carry out his ideas about the operation of political situations. Choi also believed that a monarch should base his politics on perfect virtue and find the essence of the tenets for the people in filial piety in relation to the operation of political situations, thus implementing benevolent royal government based on the support of talents with academic qualities.
      In short, Choi perceived that King Gyeongmun’s royal family much corresponded with his ideals in succession to the throne, qualities of the king, and operation of political situations, which explains why his political life was ended with the fall of King Gyeongmun’s royal family.
