    Gungsan and Jitap-ri sites in North Korea have been used as a standard of defining chronological order of comb-pattern potteries in the central-western region in Korea. This standard was established by North Korean Archaeologist, Do Yuho. Since the site plans, field notes, and artifacts of Gungsan site were lost during the Korean war, Do Yuho relied heavily on the findings from the Jitap-ri site, which was investigated after the Korean War, in order to establish the nature of Phases 1 and 2 of the Gungsan Culture.
    House No. 1 of Jitap-ri Area 1 was attributed to Gungsan Culture Phase 1, and the Jitap-ri Area 1 cultural layer and Area 2 Houses 2 and 3 were attributed to Gungsan Culture Phase 2. The basis for this chronological understanding was provided by the farming tools from this site which define the development of an agricultural system.
    However, According to radiocarbon dating, it was revealed that Jitap-ri Area 2 Houses 2 and 3 and the artifacts from the Area 1 cultural layer were in fact earlier than Gungsan Culture Phase 2, which was originally regarded as the same stage. This fact could also be observed through dwelling floor plan.
    As such, it is possible to argue that in the current chronological scheme for the Gungsan site (which was based on the chronological understanding of Jitap-ri House 1) is not valid. Indeed, it has become clear that a new chronological understanding of the Gungsan Culture and site must be attempted based on a reconsideration of the dating of Jitap-ri Area 2 Houses 2 and 3 and the Area 1 cultural layer.
