This study compares the RHS (Recovering the Human Spirit) Meditation Program and Christotherapy—two psycho-spiritual healing traditions—to examine how each understands and articulates the processes of human suffering and self-transformation.
RHS, developed by Seogwang, a Korean Buddhist nun and transpersonal psychologist, reconstructs the Yogācāra understanding of mind and contemplative practice as a contemporary group meditation program. Christotherapy, developed by Bernard J. Tyrrell, S.J., a Jesuit priest and philosopher, reinterprets the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises as a process of psycho-spiritual healing. Grounded in distinct religious and cultural backgrounds, both traditions address healing and transformation not as the mere remission of symptoms or restoration of functioning but as a process bearing upon self-understanding and existential change, and therefore lend themselves to comparison.
The study employs comparative textual analysis grounded in Hedges's non-reductive principle from comparative theology. Ken Wilber's AQAL theory is used as a hermeneutic perspective for reading the two traditions together, with its application limited to the four quadrants (I, It, We, Its). Gadamer's hermeneutic circle is consulted as a supplementary perspective for examining the meanings and limits that emerge through the comparative process.
RHS, grounded in Yogācāra, presents a five-stage healing process—pre-cultivation, beginning of cultivation, arising of bodhicitta, manifestation of the bodhisattva mind, and recovery of buddha-nature—within which awareness deepens through a complementary practice of emptying and filling and change unfolds through a recurring cycle. Christotherapy, by reinterpreting the four-week structure of the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises in a therapeutic key, presents a four-stage process of transformation—reformation, conformation, confirmation, and transformation—within which transformation unfolds through a complementary prayer of mind-fasting and spirit-feasting and deepens according to the law of spiral ascent.
A comparison through the four quadrants of AQAL reveals both commonalities and differences across all four dimensions. In the interior dimension (I), both traditions identify an automatic mechanism of self-distortion as the proximate source of suffering; in the behavioral dimension (It), a complementary structure of emptying and filling appears in both; in the cultural-communal dimension (We), virtue systems of love and compassion together with forms of therapeutic relationship are shared; and in the institutional-social dimension (Its), both require a systematically designed healing process and the interior capacities of the guide. At the same time, differences appear in the location of the self-distorting mechanism, the lineage of practice resources, the mode of therapeutic relationship, and the path of institutionalization.
The outwardly different stage structures—five and four—emerged through repeated comparison of the source texts as a shared temporal flow of self-confrontation, turning, and existential transformation. This study organizes this flow as a three-fold structure for stage comparison, within which three differences appear: in the setting of the starting point, in the mode of the turning point, and in the character of the point of completion. The originating dynamic of transformation is articulated in different languages by the two traditions. In RHS, the primacy of awareness together with the Awakening of Faith’s teaching of one mind—wherein the human person’s original nature and present condition are not divided in two—grounds the dynamic of transformation; in Christotherapy, the prevenience of grace occupies this place. Both traditions understand the turning point as a cooperative event situated neither wholly within nor wholly beyond human agency: bodhicitta does not arise apart from the accumulation of practice, and Election does not come into being apart from the prevenient working of grace.
The patterns of human transformation presented by the two traditions suggest a common direction at the level of human understanding. The Christotherapeutic movement away from self-enclosure toward God and neighbor, and the RHS movement of releasing ego-grasping and self-identification toward the awareness of buddha-nature and the bodhisattva mind, may be read—through different religious languages—as pointing together toward the easing of self-centeredness and the widening of relations beyond the self.
The human person may be understood not as a being fixed within the self but as a being opening outward toward the other, the world, and a broader horizon of meaning. Healing, accordingly, draws closer to a process of human maturing in which one’s relationships with oneself, with the other, and with transcendent meaning are newly formed.
The comparison undertaken here is bounded by the perspective of the AQAL quadrants and thus offers a hermeneutically constituted possibility rather than a claim to metaphysical identity between the two traditions. Examination through other religious traditions or empirical materials remains a task for further research.
At the meeting point of comparative religious studies and psycho-spiritual healing research, this study suggests that the spiritual resources of religious traditions can be read anew within the context of contemporary psycho-spiritual healing.

켄 윌버(Ken Wilber)의 AQAL 이론은 두 전통을 함께 읽기 위한 해석학적 관점으로 제한적으로 활용하였으며, 그 적용 범위는 사분면(I·It·We·Its)에 한정하였다.
