Joseon was founded upon Neo-Confucianism as its governing ideology, and Buddhism was gradually excluded from the center of state administration. Nevertheless, throughout the fifteenth century, Joseon kings continued to found and reconstruct Buddhist temples while directly intervening in their administration. This dissertation examines this apparent contradiction by introducing the concept of "royal temples," defined as temples founded or reconstructed by royal command and administered within the state administrative system under the king's direct authority.
Previous scholarship has generally discussed temples associated with the royal family under such categories as "royal temples," "royal memorial temples," or "royal-related temples." While these concepts are useful for explaining the relationship between the royal family and Buddhism, they do not adequately account for the political intentions and agency of the king. To address this limitation, this study introduces the concept of royal temples (Gukwang sachal), defined as temples founded or reconstructed by royal command and administered within the state's administrative system. Focusing on the period from the reign of King Taejo to that of King Seongjong, this dissertation examines the formation, expansion, and decline of these royal temples.
King Taejo established the foundations of royal temples through Buddhist sites such as Gwaneumgul and Seokwangsa, which had been associated with him before his accession and were later employed to reinforce the authority of the founding monarch. During the reign of King Taejong, reforms of the Buddhist administrative system institutionalized royal temples by granting selected temples exceptional status that allowed continued royal intervention in their administration. Under King Sejong, although royal temples were incorporated into the Seon–Gyo Buddhist system organized by the state, the king's authority over them became increasingly constrained through negotiations with court officials. In response, King Sejong established Naebuldang, creating a new model in which the king exercised direct control over financial resources, personnel, and Buddhist rituals. King Sejo further expanded royal temples by reorganizing memorial temples for former kings and queens and by founding or reconstructing temples such as Jeonginsa and Wongaksa through Buddhist auspicious signs, thereby using them to visualize royal authority and reinforce the prestige of the royal house. Under King Seongjong, however, the operation of royal temples gradually shifted to Queen Dowager Jeonghui during the regency, while the strengthening of remonstrance officials during the king's personal rule increasingly restricted direct royal intervention, leading to the gradual decline of royal temples.
This dissertation argues that the relationship between kingship and Buddhism in fifteenth-century Joseon should be understood not primarily in terms of the personal religiosity or pro-Buddhist inclinations of individual kings, but in relation to the political challenges of securing dynastic legitimacy and royal authority. Royal temples functioned as spaces in which the political will of the monarch was materialized and royal authority was symbolically represented. By introducing the concept of royal temples, this study offers a new perspective on the relationship between kingship and Buddhism in early Joseon. Furthermore, since the decline of royal temples gave way to a form of royal Buddhism led by the queen dowagers, this study also provides a foundation for understanding the development of royal Buddhism in the sixteenth century.
