영국의 웨슬리 성화운동과 미국 A.B. Simpson의 사중복음 ― 성결교 신학의 토대: 연속성과 발전과정을 중심으로 = John Wesley and A.B. Simpson: Theological development and Continuity for the foundation of Sungkyul(holiness) Theology

국문 초록 (Abstract)

전도운동으로 1907년 시작된 한국의 성결교회(기성, 예성)는 한국 개신교의 3대 교단이라고 할 만큼 외적인 성장을 경험하였다. 그러나 성결교회의 신학적 정체성을 확립하는 일은 외적인 성장을 따라잡지 못하였다. 여전히 성결교회 신학의 정체성에 관한 다양한 신학적 견해들이 경쟁하며 공존하고 있다. 기성과 예성의 대부분의 웨슬리 학자들은 웨슬리 신학이 성결교회의 신학의 기초임을 주장하는 데 반하여, 또 다른 학자들은 사중복음을 성결교 신학의 정체성이라고 주장하기도 한다. 그러나 우리가 기억해야 할 것은 웨슬리 신학과 사중복음이 상호배타적이거나 대립적인 신학체계가 아니라 신학적으로 연속선상에 있으며 발전과정에 있다는 것이다. 웨슬리신학이 아니라면 사중복음이라는 방식의 either/or (이것이냐, 저것이냐)의 양자택일의 방식으로 몰아가는 것은 웨슬리 신학과 사중복음에 대한 강한 역사적/신학적 편협성의 결과이다. 이러한 학자들의 간의 신학적 불일치에 의하여 현장의 목회자들과 신학생들은 성결교 신학의 정체성에 대한 혼란을 느낄 수밖에 없다. 이제 이러한 혼란을 불식시키고 무엇이 성결교회의 신학인가를 다음세대의 성결교회 지도자들에게 분명하게 밝혀 줄 시기가 되었다. 이러한 시대적 요구에 반응하기 위하여 한국 성결교회의 신학적이 기반이 되는 존 웨슬리의 성화론과 A. B. 심프슨의 사중복음을 연구하는 일은 매우 의미 있는 일이라 생각한다. 즉, 성결교 신학의 정립을 위해서는 존 웨슬리의 성화론을 연구하는 것이 반드시 필요하며 아울러 A. B. Simpson 의 사중복음에 대한 연구 또한 결코 소홀히 할 수 없는 것이다. 한국의 성결교회는 어느 날 갑자기 진공상태에서 탄생된 교단이 아니다. 기독교 역사의 큰 물줄기의 한 흐름 가운데서 시대적 요청에 의하여 필연적으로 생성된 교회라고 할 것이다. 기독교 역사의 물줄기에는 항상 “성화”에 대한 강조점이 있었다. 웨슬리는 이 성화교리를 강조하며 발전시켰으며 19세기 북미를 초교파적으로 휩쓴 성결운동의 신학적 토대가 되었다. 북미의 성결운동은 성결 교리를 중심으로 사중복음을 강조하기 시작하였는데 이 사중복음이라는 용어를 신학적으로 정리하고 최초로 사용한 인물이 A. B. Simpson이다. 그리고 웨슬리의 심프슨의 성결운동은 한국 성결교회에 역사적/신학적으로 큰 영향을 주었기 때문에 이들의 신학적 특징 내지 공통점은 곧 성결교회 신학의 특징이라고 해도 과언이 아니다. 그러므로 성결론을 중심으로 웨슬리의 구원론과 심프슨의 사중복음을 연속성과 공통점을 중심으로 파악하는 작업은 한국 성결교회 신학의 정체성을 찾아 가는 데 없어서는 안 될 신학적 작업이 될 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Since its foundation in 1907, Korea Holiness Church (including Jesus Holiness and Christ Holiness) has experienced a significant outward growth in terms of its membership and the number of local churches. However, it has failed to build up its theological foundation and identity. As a result, there has been different theological views and diversities in the denomination. For this reason, the members of the church and the theological students of the theological seminaries which belong to the denomination have been confused for their theological identity. While Wesley scholars in the denomination argue that John Wesley`s theology is the theological foundation, other historical-theology scholars insist that the four-fold gospel (regeneration, sanctification, divine healing and the second coming of Christ) should be the theological foundation for the denomination. Some argue that if Wesley`s theology is the foundation of denomination, there is no theological difference between the Methodist Church and the Holiness Church. They argue that, therefore, the four-fold gospel should be the theological foundation for the denomination. However, there is one thing we should remember: John Wesley`s theology and the four-fold gospel are not mutually exclusive but complementary each other. In order to articulate a theological foundation for the Holiness church, Wesley`s theology, as well as, A.B. Simpson`s four-fold gospel should be studied. Korea Holiness Church has its significant root historically and theologically derived from John Wesley and A. B. Simpson. John Wesley`s doctrine of sanctification has deeply influenced on the 19th century holiness movement of North America. And the movement was the direct influence for the foundation of Korea Holiness Church. Therefore one should not neglect any of these two theological streams. With special reference to Wesley`s doctrine of sanctification and A.B. Simpson`s four-fold gospel, one should focus on their theological development and continuity rather than discontinuity.
