『배재』를 통해 본 高普 학생들의 현실인식과 문예의 특성 고찰

국문 초록 (Abstract)

그동안의 교지 연구는 주로 전문학교 및 대학 교지에 집중되어 왔지만, 高普(고등보통학교)의 교지들도 시대적 특수성 속에서 중요성을 지닌다. 이 글에서는 학생회가 주체가 되어 발간된 최초의 본격적인 고보교지라 할 수 있는 『배재』를 대상으로 현실인식과 문예의 특성을 고찰하였다.
일제강점기인 1920년대 고보 학생들은 당대 현실에 대한 첨예한 인식과 사회적 소명 의식을 보여주었다. 많은 논설문에서 ‘생존경쟁의 분투장’에서 ‘낙오자’가 된 조선의 현실을 극복하기 위해 과학 기술과 산업의 발전이 주장되었다. 또 일인들의 토지 침탈과 비참한 농촌 현실, 농민들의 북간도 이주 등의 사회적 이슈가 정면으로 다루어졌으며, 물산장려운동과 농촌계몽운동의 당위성이 역설되었다.
교지에서 높은 비중을 차지하는 문예물들에서도 이러한 사회의식을 반영한 작품 세계를 볼 수 있었다. 하지만 당대 교지 문학작품의 주류를 형성한 것은 감상적 낭만주의의 세계였다. 단편적인 문학론의 성격을 띤 글에서 ‘감정의 자발적 유로’를 주창한 워즈워드의 이론이 언급되고 있으며, 실제로 대부분의 시 작품들은 소박한 감상의 직설적 토로와 영탄의 어조를 보여주었다.
단편소설 중에서도 낭만주의적 관념의 세례를 받은 것으로 보이는 작품을 발견할 수 있어서, 낭만주의가 당시 학생들에게 광범위하고 상당한 영향력을 끼쳤음을 알 수 있었다. 그 밖에 감상성과 신파적인 통속성이 두드러진 작품과 생활 체험을 바탕으로 한 사실적인 작품도 학생 소설의 한 양상을 보여주었다. 이들 작품의 질적 수준은 미숙한 아마추어리즘을 벗어나지 못한 것이었지만, 일반 청년 학생들이 근대문학 형식을 통해 사회의식과 내면세계를 표출하는 양상을 보여준다는 점에서 의미가 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Most of researches on school magazines have centered on those of colleges and universities, however, school magazines of gobo(highschool) also have an importance because of their periodic characteristics. This paper examines the recognition of reality and literary characteristics of Baejae, the first full-scale highschool magazine published by the student council.
Highschool students under Japanese colonization in 1920s showed their acute recognition on reality and will to fulfill social obligations. They asserted that to overcome the difficulties of Choson which became a failure in the struggle for existence, Choson needed to develop scientific technology and industry. Dealing with social issues such as plunder of land by Japanese, wretched realities of rural community and migration of farmers to North Gando, they emphasized the necessity for Korean Goods Promotion Movement and Peasant Enlightenment Movement.
Literary works which take high percentage of writings in school magazines also reflected such social awareness. However, the main current of literary texts in school magazines expressed the world of sentimental romanticism. In writings with the characteristics of literary criticism, theory by Wordsworth who advocated 'spontaneous overflow of emotion' was mentioned and in fact, most of poems displayed direct expression of emotion and exclamatory tone.
Some short novels showed that they were baptized with an idea of romanticism and this paper could find out that romanticism had considerable and extensive influence on students at that time. There are also some novels with sentimentality and popularity and some realistic novels based on life experiences, both showing one aspect of student novels. Their quality is more of immature amateurism, however, it is meaningful in that common young students expressed their awareness of society and inner worlds through the form of modern literature.
