Scrambling Effects on Relative Clause Comprehension in Korean

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study examines the effects of scrambling on the comprehension of ambiguous relative clauses in Korean. Twenty-eight native Korean speakers were tested on their comprehension of an ambiguous relative clause construction in which the relative clause could be interpreted as modifying either one of two NPs. Results showed that participants chose an interpretation in which the relative clause modified the lower NP significantly more often when sentences were scrambled, resulting in OSV word order, as opposed to the more standard SOV word order. These results suggest that although Korean is a language in which scrambling is widely accepted, even native speakers disprefer scrambled word order, resulting in more Recency effects in the interpretation of OSV sentences.
