The purpose of this study is to examine the nature of prosocial behavior, derive variables influencing the children's prosocial behavior from development theory, and suggest ways to stimulate the children's prosocial behavior.
Theories of prosocial development are categorized into four theories; biological, psychoanalytic, social-learning, and cognitive theories, and each emphasized different aspects of prosocial behavior. The various variables influencing children's prosocial behavior are divided into internal factors and situational factors. The internal factors are age, sex, moral reasoning, role taking, empathy, and self-concept. The situational factors are costs and tasks, the relationship between benefactor and recipient, social evaluation, parents' child rearing, and TV.
The following ways are suggested to the teachers and the parents to stimulate the children's prosocial behavior. 1) nurturant rearing. 2) Be a good, altruistic model. 3) Use rational, affective-oriented modes of discipline that are heavy on reasoning tend to promote the role-taking skills and the sympathetic emotional responses to distress that are associated with a concern for others and self-sacrificial behaviors. 4) Don't use forceful and punitive forms of discipline. 5) Provide children with experience of sharing materials and completing together in small group activities.
