This descriptive study aimed to identify the current status of generative artificial intelligence (AI) use among nursing students and to assess their perceptions of its usefulness, limitations, and negative impacts. A self-reported survey was conducted from May 13 to 30, 2025, with 189 nursing students. A modified version of the tool developed by Tortella et al. (2025) was utilized to examine students’ experiences using generative AI for academic and learning purposes, as well as their perceptions of its usefulness, limitations, and negative impacts. The results indicated that 99.5% of participants had experience using generative AI, and 74.6% had used it to support their understanding of major coursework. The main purposes of usage include learning support, document summarization, brainstorming, assignment writing, and grammar correction. Overall, the user experience was perceived as positive, and the level of difficulty was considered easy, suggesting strong potential for generative AI to function as a learning tool. Among the perceived usefulness, time efficiency received the highest score; however, students did not perceive generative AI as a substitute for instructor-provided information or existing academic information sources. Regarding limitations and negative impacts, concerns about information inaccuracy and reliability were the highest, followed by substantial concerns related to ethics and copyright. Perception analysis by gender and academic year revealed that female students reported significantly higher levels of perceived negative impacts, whereas third- and fourth-year students reported significantly higher perceptions of usefulness. These findings highlight the need to assess the level of generative AI utilization within nursing students and to develop and implement systematic guidelines and educational programs to support the responsible use of generative AI among nursing programs.
