이슬람 근대화 사상의 현대적 교훈: 무함마드 압두(Muhammad Abduh)와 파즐라 라만(Fazlur Rahman)의 사상을 중심으로 = Lessons from Islamic Modernization Thoughts for the Contemporary World: Critical Thoughts of Fazlur Rahman and Muhammad Abduh

국문 초록 (Abstract)

작년 범 이슬람 세계의 커다란 반발과 유혈사태를 자아냈던 영화 <무슬림의 무지>의 개봉 사례나 최근 보스턴 마라톤 폭발 사건 주동 세력의 배후에 대한 조심스러운 예측들은 심각해지는 이슬람세계와 다른 문명권 간의 대립을 보여주고 있다. 범세계적 민주주의 개혁의 노력에도 불구하고 많은 이슬람 사회들에서는 이러한 노력들이 오히려 소요를 일으키고 있다. 이러한 현상에 대한 많은 논평들은 이슬람 문화는 곧 서구, 근대적 가치, 민주주의와 타협하길 거부하는 원리주의적인 습성과 같다는 인식을 내비친다. 그러나 이러한 인식의 근저에는 문화적 특수성을 민족적, 인종적, 지정학적으로 선험적인 것으로 치부하는 서구 중심적 편향이 있다. 이 글은 갈수록 요원해지는 듯 보이는 민주주의사회들과 이슬람 세계의 평화적 공존에 대한 모색의 일환으로서, 이슬람 세계에 대한 오명들의 역사를 반추해 보고 이것의 문제점을 역사적 제도주의의 관점에서 비판해 보고자 한다. 또한 이슬람 근대화 운동의 선구적인 존재였던 무함마드 압두와 파즐라 라만의 사상 및 운동을 살펴보고, 이것이 현재 이슬람에 대한 이슬람-서구의 논의들과 그 배경들에 대해 가지는 함의가 무엇인지 제시해 보겠다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The release of provocative film <Innocence of Muslims> last year, which caused massive demonstrations and bloodshed within Islamic World, and the recent Boston Marathon Bombings and cautious speculations about its background demonstrate increasing conflict between Islam World and other civilizations. Albeit the long-held democratization efforts on the global scale, they fall into political and social disorder in the majority of Islam societies. Most commentaries on this phenomena equate Islamic culture with fundamentalist nature which refuses to accept the modern values and democratic attributes of the West. However, the western-centric bias, which considers cultural peculiarities as national, ethnographical, and geopolitical a priori, underlies such understanding. The author traces a brief history of misrecognitions about Islam and critically reviews its implications from the perspective of historical institutionalism. As a case study, this article tries to get inspirations for the better relationship between the contesting cultures by examining modernization movements and thoughts of two salient Islamic thinkers, Muhammad Abduh and Fazlur Rahman. It concludes with suggesting what these thinkers' thoughts implicate with respect to the contemporary debates upon Islam.
