Since 1960 years group counseling has expanded from a method for resoving individual problems in relating to others. Many counselor have reported that group counseling has severaal advantages over individual counseling.(a) It saves time, because one counselor can help several people at once. (b)People derive comfort and support from observing that others have similar problem. (c)People can learn ricariously, by watching how others behave, and they can explore attitudes and reactions by interaction with a variety of people, not just with the counselor.
This study can help teachers to understand group counseling taking a growing interest accurately through theoretical study.
This study is summarized as followings.
(1) Group counseling is dynamic process of human relationship helping to change individual's attitude and behavior actively through group process in the permissive, confident and receptive atmosphere under expert's direction for relative normal people.
(2) The purpose of group counseling is as followings.
① To understand individual and other's problem and build up problem-solving faculty.
② To understand individual drive of himself and learn how to satisfy it through group process.
③ To help other's problem to solve.
④ To provide with opportunity taking individual couseling.
(3) In group counseling many methods as followings has used successfully in solving individual problems: ① psychoanalytic approach ② T-group ③ Encounter group ④ Rational encounter group ⑤ Transactional analysis ⑥ Gestalt group ⑦ Behavioral approach
(4) Planning of group counseling dealt with formation of group, size of group, place of group couseling, frequency and duration of session, openness of group, spontaneity of group members and selection of group members.
(5) Group couseling go through several stage no matter Whether it is led by some approach : ① exploratory stage ② transition stage ③ action stage ④ termination stage
(6) Group counseling, being different from individual counseling depends its success upon effective performance of group leader's role. And so leaders have to study knowledge about group dynamics and group process Group counselor needs fundmental techmique : ① listening ② reflection ③ clarification ④ interpretation ⑤ summarizing
(7) Compared with individual counseling, group counseling has not only its value and uniquess, but also demerits and linitation. On this reason, in schools group counseling have to be excecuted to resolve student's problems after Satisfactory spot experimental study.
