한국 현대시의 한영 번역 연구 -시제詩題 번역 전략과 결정 요인을 중심으로- = Korean-English Translation of Korean Modern Poetry

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this paper is to examine how important the title is in the translation of Korean modern poetry. The Korean language is quiet different from the English language in linguistic characteristic.
The difference between the two has caused a lot of difficulties in translating poems in literary text. For the example, the culture-specific items of the source text cannot be translated fully because they are different from those of target language. Therefore, the translators are asked to be the intermediaries who enable the users of the target language to understand the exotic elements of the source language.
This paper has aimed at examining many cases of the poetry translation of Korean literature, which contain lots of cultural elements, as the basis for the analysis of the translation pattern and its strategy. The findings of this study are as follows. Firstly, the source text of Korean modern poetry has been translated into the target text in the English language by four translation patterns, such as literal translation, liberal translation, substitution and emprunt. The strategies used in the patterns have their strong and weak points respectively. In most cases of Korean-English translation of Korean modern poetry, the connotative meaning as well as the denotative meaning of poetic expressions has been successfully expressed but some cultural elements in the Korean language cannot be fully translated into English. Consequently, the deeper and continuous study of the translation of Korean poetry text is urgently needed to introduce the excellence of Korean poetry to the whole world.
