This study begins with the awareness that the qualitative level of poems included in Korean language textbooks plays a crucial role in the effectiveness of poetry education in elementary schools. Although previous studies have examined the appropriateness of poems selected for textbooks, much of the existing research has focused on analyzing the structure and organization of textbooks or identifying the competencies and abilities fostered through literature units. While such studies have undoubtedly contributed to the development of poetry education, further improvement in elementary poetry education requires a closer examination of the literary characteristics and suitability of the children’s poems themselves included in the textbooks.
To this end, this study conducted in-depth interviews with teachers who taught first- and second-grade students in 2024 and 2025, exploring their perceptions of the 2022 revised Korean language textbooks. Over successive curriculum revisions, the proportion of highly literary works included in elementary textbooks has gradually increased, reflecting the growing sophistication and diversification of children’s literature and poetry discourse. This paper analyzes the inclusion of poems and songs in the 2022 revised Korean language textbooks and examines teachers’ perceptions through qualitative interview data.
